Getting your Learners Licence (Learners Permit) in Queensland.

If you are over 25 ..

• You are encouraged but NOT required to have 100 log book hours recorded.
• You must hold a Learners Licence for 12 months* before taking a TEST.
• You must get a Learners Licence* before taking driving LESSONS.
• *Unless you hold an overseas licence or obtain an exemption

If are under 25 ..

• You must hold a Learners Licence* before you can take your first driving lesson.
• You must hold a Learners Licence for 12 months* before taking a driving TEST.
• You should be at least 16 years of age to get a Learners Licence.
• You can practise your Learner Licence Test Questions Online here.
• An official log book will be issued to you with your Learners Licence.
• Bring your Log Book to every lesson to enable us to record your experience hours.
• You must be 17 years old to get your P's
• You must have a minimum of 100 hours log book hours recorded.
• Any 10 hours of lessons logged with an accredited driver trainer will be credited as 30 hours of the total of 100 hours required.

Where do I go for my written test ?

• You will need to attend a Queensland Transport Department Office
• If you live in a rural location you may be able to attend your local police station.

What forms do I need ?

• You will need an Application for Driving Licence Form * from the Department of Transport.
• Do not sign * the form until asked to do so when you lodge this personally at a Dept of Transport Office.

What evidence do I need to take with me ?

To obtain a learner licence you must prove who you are and where you live by providing ..

• A Primary document (for example a birth certificate, passport or citizenship certificate).
• A Secondary document (for example a bank or credit card with a signature).
• Proof of residency (for example a paid service account - rates, electricity or telephone - showing your name and address).
• At least one Primary or Secondary document must include a signature.

What will I be tested on ?

• First Aid & Accidents

What sort of Test is it ?

• There are 30 questions in the general road rules test.
• The questions have multiple choice answers -
• Each question has a number of possible answers and you must mark the correct one.
• The test has two main sections.
• In Section 1, you must correctly answer nine out of the 10 questions.
• In Section 2, you must correctly answer 18 out of the 20 questions.

How much will it cost ?

• Currently QT charges $17.25 each time you attempt the Learners Licence Test.
• A Learners licence is issued on passing the test.
• Currently QT charges $65.30 for the Learners licence on issue.
• A Learners licence is valid for 3 years.

Will I need to re-sit the test to renew my learners ?

• No. You only need to pass the test once.
• ..unless you apply for a different type of licence or you need to renew an expired learner licence.

Can I try again right away if I fail?

• No. You can sit for the test once only, on any given day.
• Try again at least one day later !

What Resources do I need to help me study the Road Rules for my test ?

• 'Your keys to driving in Queensland' is a book you can buy at Queensland Transport customer service centres and newsagents. This guide provides information about driving on Queensland roads.

		Get this book from QT offices at these locations or your local Newsagency

What are my obligations once I have my learners permit ?

• Once you have obtained a learner licence, you are able to drive a motor vehicle on the road providing you are with someone who has held an open licence for that class of vehicle for at least one year.
• Your learner licence is valid for 3 years and you must adhere to the conditions specified for that licence.
• You are only allowed to drive the type of vehicle specified on your licence.
• You must keep the licence with you when you drive and show it to a police officer if requested.
• You are by law to display L Plates on the front and rear of the vehicle.
• if you place L Plates on the windows of the vehicle, you are potentially breaking the law by restricting vision of the driver
